Located in Ontonagon on Lake Superior's south shore, the Big Iron River boat ramp offers convenient access to the world's largest freshwater lake. This developed access site features 54 parking spaces for car/trailer combinations and 30 additional car-only spaces, with three accessible parking spots near the ramp. Vault toilets are available on-site, and the U.S. Army Corps breakwater provides some protection for launching operations.
Beyond paddling, this location offers excellent amenities for a full day outing. The access site is within walking distance of downtown Ontonagon's shops, restaurants, and museums, as well as nearby waterfront trails. A unique feature is the opportunity to view historic iron ore loading docks where freighters up to 1,000 feet in length load cargo—a notable sight reflecting the region's mining heritage. Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for Lake Superior's dynamic conditions; this is an inland sea that demands respect and proper safety equipment.
