Big River Campground offers a concrete boat ramp for launching kayaks, canoes, and motorboats into the Mississippi River near Prairie du Chien. The facility includes parking and vault toilet facilities. Be aware that this area is subject to flooding and river levels fluctuate seasonally, so check current conditions before your trip.
The Mississippi River at this location (Pool 9) is a major waterway with substantial flow averaging over 685,000 cubic feet per second and average water velocities around 11 feet per second. Paddlers should be prepared for strong currents and the scale of this powerful river. The site provides excellent access for day trips to sandbars and nearby sloughs, as well as fishing opportunities throughout the Upper Mississippi River Valley. Note: Camping is prohibited within 200 feet of boat landings and access areas. A public boat ramp with additional parking is located approximately 1/2 mile away if you need an alternative launch point.
