Brantley Lake State Park, located 12-15 miles north of Carlsbad via US-285, offers convenient access to Brantley Lake on the Pecos River. The park features two boat ramps with multiple docking facilities, including two 8' x 60' Meeco docks on the east and west sides (with Trex flooring) and a 24' x 32' fishing dock with concrete decking. This well-developed facility accommodates various watercraft including kayaks, canoes, motorboats, and jet skis, making it suitable for paddlers of all experience levels.
Beyond the water, Brantley Lake State Park provides excellent amenities and recreation opportunities. Visitors will find developed and primitive campsites, restrooms with showers, a sandy swimming beach, and several hiking trails. The park is particularly notable for exceptional bird watching, as the Pecos River valley serves as a major waterfowl migration route with numerous species present year-round. A weather station on-site provides current conditions including temperature, wind speed, and wind direction—useful information for paddlers planning their trips. The nearby Guadalupe Back Country Byway and Carlsbad Field Office Recreational Caves offer additional exploration opportunities in the area.
