The Brown Lakes State Wildlife Area provides access to the upper South Clear Creek, a scenic mountain stream in western Colorado. The boat ramp is well-suited for launching kayaks, canoes, and small motorized boats to explore the creek and nearby lakes.
The access site is located off Forest Road 515, about 26.5 miles south of the town of Lake City. A valid hunting or fishing license, or a State Wildlife Area pass, is required for all visitors 16 and older. Boaters should be aware of any current regulations regarding use of the area.
The creek in this section is relatively small and shallow, with a moderate gradient typical of high mountain streams. Paddlers can expect a peaceful, scenic float through the rugged Hermit Lakes Creek valley. Nearby Bristol Head Campground provides camping options for those looking to spend more time enjoying the area.
