About This Access Site
Butterford Waterway Park is a single-lane boat ramp providing access to the South Gulf Cove Canal System, an expansive 50+ mile network of navigable waterways in Port Charlotte. Located at the uppermost point of South Cove, this facility is ideal for kayakers, canoeists, and small boats looking to explore calm, sheltered canal passages. The ramp includes a courtesy dock, approximately 30 trailer parking spaces, and basic amenities including restrooms and picnic pavilions.

The South Gulf Cove Canal System connects to both freshwater and saltwater environments through a lock system leading to the harbor and greater Charlotte Harbor area. Paddlers can expect relatively flat, protected water throughout the canal network, making it suitable for various skill levels. The nearby Island Bay National Wildlife Refuge offers additional scenic paddling opportunities and wildlife viewing, with shallow bays that support abundant shorebirds and waterfowl. This access point is well-suited for day trips, fishing expeditions, or leisurely canoe and kayak exploration of the diverse South Cove ecosystem.
