China Bend is a well-maintained public access point on Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake near Northport, Washington, offering a paved boat ramp and dock suitable for kayaks, canoes, and larger motorboats. The site features a vault toilet and information kiosk, with wheelchair accessibility available. This is the uppermost launch point on Lake Roosevelt where larger vessels can safely access the water, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the northern reaches of the reservoir.
Paddlers launching from China Bend can explore the scenic upper arm of the lake where it transitions into river coves and smaller tributaries like Flat Creek and Ryan Creek. The area is part of the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area and offers relatively calm, protected water compared to the main reservoir below. With three nearby campgrounds available (Evans, Snag Cove, and North Gorge—all reservable), the location is convenient for multi-day paddling trips.
Before launching, check current water conditions and note that Lake Roosevelt's level fluctuates seasonally due to Grand Coulee Dam operations, which can affect launch ease and available parking. Plan accordingly and bring sufficient supplies, as amenities are limited in this remote part of the lake.
