About This Access Site
Cowford Landing offers access to the Choctawhatchee River near Ponce de Leon in Walton County. The facility features a steep, single-lane concrete boat ramp located within a small park on a bluff overlooking the river. A launch fee applies. To reach the ramp, turn west on Cedar Tree Road from SR 79 and follow it to the end.

The Choctawhatchee River is a major waterway—the 8th-order stream drains 4,527 square miles and flows 143 miles to the Gulf of Mexico with an average flow of 7,754 cubic feet per second. Paddlers should be aware that water levels can fluctuate significantly; the ramp becomes very shallow during low river conditions, which may limit access for larger boats. The river's gentle 1.1 ft/mile average gradient and moderate current (2.82 ft/second) make it suitable for recreational paddling and boating, though conditions vary with seasonal water levels.
