The Creswell boat ramp provides access to the Scuppernong River, a medium-sized coastal plain waterway in Washington County, NC, located approximately 71 miles northeast of Greenville. The ramp features a single launching lane, courtesy dock, and 11 trailer parking spaces, making it suitable for kayaks, canoes, and motorized boats. This is one of two primary public access points on the river; the other is located at the visitor center in Columbia.
The Scuppernong is a slow-moving, gently sloping river ideal for recreational paddling and wildlife viewing. With an average velocity of 1.07 feet/second and minimal gradient (0.2 ft/mile), expect calm, easy paddling conditions. The river drains a 172-square-mile watershed with average flows around 186 cubic feet/second, making it navigable year-round for most paddlers. Nearby attractions include the expansive Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Phelps, and Somerset Place historic site, offering opportunities to explore rare pocasin wetland habitat and view wintering tundra swans (November–February).
Paddlers often find the most rewarding experience by venturing into smaller creeks branching off the main river. The calm, clear waters and abundant wildlife make this an excellent destination for leisurely day trips and nature exploration.
