About This Access Site
Cumbest Bluff provides convenient access to the Pascagoula River, a major waterway flowing through Jackson County, Mississippi toward the Gulf of Mexico. Located in the Moss Point area, this boat ramp serves as a good launching point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats exploring this 80-mile river system. The site benefits from proximity to the Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Grand Bay Estuarine Research Reserve, offering opportunities to paddle through diverse habitats ranging from freshwater streams to coastal marshes.

The Pascagoula River is a substantial watercourse with an average flow of over 16,000 cubic feet per second and a relatively gentle gradient of 0.5 feet per mile, making it generally navigable for most paddlers. Current velocity averages around 3 feet per second, so paddlers should account for moderate flow conditions. The river's major stream order and broad 9,363-square-mile drainage basin mean water levels can fluctuate seasonally, so checking conditions before your trip is recommended. From this access point, paddlers have access to approximately 81 miles of river before reaching the Gulf.
