The Dog River access point provides boat launch access to the Escatawpa River, a large river system draining 1,021 square miles across Mississippi. Located in Jackson County near the bridge crossing, this is a primitive access site with no developed facilities. Paddlers should expect to carry gear down to a small sandbar for launching. The site is accessible from Lott Road west of Mobile, Alabama—drive until the pavement ends and continue a couple miles to the bridge.
The Escatawpa River is a substantial waterway with an average flow of 2,067 cubic feet per second and average current velocity of 1.98 feet per second, making it suitable for experienced paddlers and motorboats. The river has a gentle average gradient of 2.2 feet per mile. This access point is located near the headwaters of the system, approximately 137 miles upstream from the river mouth, offering freshwater paddling opportunities.
The Dog River area is adjacent to significant natural resources, including the Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge and Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, which represent highly productive coastal ecosystems. Paddlers should be prepared for primitive conditions and plan accordingly with self-sufficiency in mind.
