About This Access Site
The East Keyser Street access point provides boat launch facilities on the Kankakee River, a major river system spanning 133 miles with a drainage area of over 5,100 square miles. This section of the Kankakee flows at an average velocity of 2.7 feet per second with a gentle gradient of 1.4 feet per mile, making it suitable for kayakers and canoeists of moderate experience. The river at this location is wide and well-established, typical of a major stream system.

Paddlers launching from East Keyser Street should stay in the main river channel (left of any islands) and avoid smaller channels to the river right and sluice gates to the east. Be aware that the Kankakee Dam lies just west of the arched rail bridge near Illinois Route 50 and requires a portage—a significant undertaking that extends roughly three-quarters of a mile through cement walls. An alternative portage route is available through the city park on river right. The area offers good fishing opportunities for smallmouth bass, channel catfish, walleye, and Northern pike. Additional boat ramps are available at nearby Warner Bridge Day Use Area and Area 9 parking lot if you prefer alternate launch points.
