Eight Mile Ford provides public access to a productive stretch of the Madison River near Ennis, Montana. Located at the confluence of the Madison River and Blaine Spring Creek in the Rocky Mountain foothills, this ramp serves as a convenient launching point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The site sits within a relatively short but popular section of river that's part of the larger "50 mile riffle" extending from Lyons Bridge to Varney Bridge, making it an ideal starting point for various float trip distances.
This access point is valuable because public boat ramps are limited along this stretch of the Madison River. Eight Mile Ford is one of only a few launching options between McAtee Bridge and Varney Bridge, making it essential for planning your trip. Anglers and paddlers should note that Cobblestone ramp (downstream) does not have public access, so Eight Mile Ford and the primitive Story Ditch ramp north of McAtee are the primary options in this area.
The surrounding area offers additional recreation opportunities, including the historic Ennis National Fish Hatchery and Axolotl Lakes recreation area approximately 14 miles southwest. Before launching, check current Madison River conditions and plan your float accordingly based on the water level and your paddling skill level.
