Elephant Butte Lake State Park - Rock Canyon Marina

Rock Canyon Marina provides access to Elephant Butte Lake, a large reservoir on the Rio Grande created by Elephant Butte Dam (built in 1916). Located in Sierra County near the town of Elephant Butte, this launch site serves kayakers, canoeists, and motorboaters looking to explore the scenic 36-mile-long lake. The marina is situated near South Monticello Campground, which offers 50 RV sites with electric and water hookups, plus nearby tent camping options at other state park locations.

**Important Note:** Rock Canyon boat ramp is currently closed due to low water levels. Before planning your trip, contact Elephant Butte Lake State Park to confirm current conditions and availability. When operational, the ramp provides straightforward access to the main lake body, making it suitable for day trips and extended paddling. The site is accessible via I-25 South (Exit 83) from Albuquerque, approximately 145 miles south. Paddlers should be aware that lake levels fluctuate seasonally, which can affect launch conditions and access throughout the year.
