The Federal Dam access site on Leech Lake River offers excellent launching facilities for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats seeking access to Leech Lake's northern waters. Located within the Chippewa National Forest, this well-maintained U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facility features concrete boat ramps, ample paved parking with trailer spaces, and a long, gradual ramp design that accommodates both small paddling craft and larger vessels. The site provides quick central access to Leech Lake, making it ideal for day trips or multi-day excursions.
Beyond the launch itself, Federal Dam Recreation Area offers substantial amenities for extended visits, including 73 wooded campsites with electrical hookups, flush toilets, showers, and a dump station. The area is renowned as a premier fishing destination for walleye, perch, musky, and northern pike, but paddlers will also find scenic water access and proximity to several hiking trails including portions of the North Country National Scenic Trail. The calm inlet waters near the dam provide a gentle starting point before accessing the broader lake, making it suitable for paddlers of varying skill levels.
