About This Access Site
Fort Buhlow Recreation Area offers a well-developed public boat launch on the Red River in Alexandria, featuring a three-lane ramp and dock facility. The site includes excellent amenities such as paved parking, restrooms, picnic areas, and a ranger station. Access is via US Highway 71 to Montgomery, then west through downtown; look for Old Jefferson Highway and follow signs to the access road.

The Red River at this location is a major waterway—a powerful stream order 9 river with an average flow of approximately 68,000 cubic feet per second and current velocities around 6 feet per second. Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for moderate to strong current conditions. **Important:** The boat ramp closes when river levels reach 25 feet with predicted continued rise, so check current conditions before launching. The site is suitable for kayaking, canoeing, and motorboating, and also serves as a hub for fishing, hiking, and other outdoor recreation.
