Frank Holten State Recreation Area offers boat ramp access to Main Lake in Cahokia Heights, conveniently located within view of the St. Louis Gateway Arch. The recreation area features one of the largest day-use facilities in the region, with picnic shelters, barbecue grills, and drinking water available. The two lakes at Frank Holten—Whispering Willow Lake and Grand Marais Lake—comprise over 200 acres of water with approximately 5 miles of shoreline, providing ample paddling opportunity in an urban setting.
Paddlers and boaters should note the 10-horsepower motor limit for motorized vessels. The lakes are stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish, making them popular for both fishing and recreational paddling. Note that boat rentals are not available on-site, so you'll need to bring your own kayak, canoe, or boat. The access point makes an ideal destination for day trips, with nearby attractions including Gateway Arch National Park and Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site for those looking to combine water recreation with historical sightseeing.
