About This Access Site
This boat ramp provides access to the Mecan River's Main Impoundment within the 2,400-acre Germania Marsh State Wildlife Area in Marquette County. The access point serves as a popular launching spot for paddlers and boaters exploring this scenic wetland ecosystem. **Note: The Main Dam Road gates are open from the regular fishing season opening day through the end of August to respect wildlife refuge operations**, so plan your visit accordingly during these months.

From the Main Dam, paddlers have two primary route options. The 1.6-mile stretch to Duck Creek Road features a scenic, slow-moving section as the river empties into a shallow mile-long marsh with good wildlife viewing opportunities. For longer outings, experienced paddlers can continue 6.3 miles downstream to Elk Road—the most popular section of the Lower Mecan River. The area is actively managed for wetland restoration, water level manipulation, and wildlife habitat, making it excellent for nature observation including bird watching and wildlife photography.

The Germania Marsh landscape includes open marshes, swamp hardwoods, and restored prairie and oak savannah habitats. Paddlers should expect calm, shallow water conditions typical of an impoundment and marsh system, making this site suitable for canoes, kayaks, and small motorboats during the accessible season.
