About This Access Site
Grand Marais West is a public water access ramp located within Grand Marais harbor on Lake Superior's North Shore, approximately 27 miles northeast of Tofte and 21 miles southwest of Horseshoe Bay. The ramp is partially sheltered by an 85-foot breakwater, offering some protection from Lake Superior's notorious conditions. Be aware that this is a short ramp with a notable drop-off at the end caused by power loading, so exercise caution when launching and landing, particularly in rough water or low water conditions.

The site offers convenient facilities for paddlers and boaters, including a public park adjacent to the launch area within walking distance of restaurants, local businesses, and lodging in downtown Grand Marais. Additional amenities at the broader harbor complex include a service dock with fuel (premium unleaded and diesel), pump-out facilities, and a fish cleaning station. The marina operates seasonally from early May through October and accommodates both kayaks/canoes and motorized vessels. Given Lake Superior's unpredictable weather and powerful waves, paddlers should check conditions thoroughly before launching and use appropriate safety equipment and skills for open water paddling.
