Grand Portage Safe Harbor is a protected marina access point located in scenic Grand Portage Bay on Lake Superior's North Shore. The facility features a large concrete boat ramp with an "L"-shaped crib dock that provides excellent wave protection—ideal for launching kayaks, canoes, and larger boats. The shallow, sheltered bay makes this an especially good choice for paddlers looking for calmer conditions or those preparing for Superior crossings. Paved parking accommodates 10 vehicles with trailers, and portable restroom facilities are available on-site.
The marina is privately owned and operated by the Grand Portage Band of the Chippewa and offers a full range of amenities including fuel sales, a convenience store, and lodging options nearby. The facility is open seasonally (early May through October) and provides additional services such as slip rentals and tackle sales. For paddlers, this location offers convenient access to explore Grand Portage Bay and serves as a logical launch point between Thunder Bay to the north and Grand Marais to the south. Note that dock areas may be shallow near the end, so check conditions before launching larger vessels.
