**Location & Facilities**
Grand River Locks is located off State Highway 22 on Lower Locks Road near Montello in Marquette County, Wisconsin, on the northern edge of Grand River Marsh Wildlife Area. The site features two large parking areas and an ADA-compliant pathway that crosses the former lock channel and connects to a fishing pier on the Upper Fox River. A portable restroom is available during spring and summer months.
**River Character**
The Upper Fox River at this location is a large river (7th stream order) with an average flow of approximately 2,347 cubic feet per second and moderate current averaging 3.6 feet per second. The river has a scenic, winding character with a relatively gentle gradient of 2.4 feet per mile. This historic site features the Grand River Lock, one of seven stone locks along the Upper Fox River system, each originally providing about 5 feet of lift. Today most Upper Fox locks are inoperable except at Eureka, but the river remains accessible to both motorized and non-motorized boaters.
**Access Notes**
This is an ideal access point for paddlers and boaters exploring the scenic Upper Fox River. The relatively calm water and established lock system make it suitable for canoeists and kayakers of varying experience levels. The nearby Fox River National Wildlife Refuge (1,054 acres) offers beautiful wetland and upland habitat along the river corridor.
