About This Access Site
The Greenhead access point on the Sabine River in Smith County provides year-round boat launch access to this major river system. Located off FM 1794 (approximately 19 miles east on US-80), the site features a boat ramp and parking area. This access point is managed by the U.S. Forest Service Sabine National Forest and offers primitive camping facilities without hookups for those planning extended trips.

The Sabine River at this location is a substantial waterway—a major river system (Stream Order 8) with an average flow of over 9,100 cubic feet per second and relatively gentle gradient of 0.8 feet per mile. Paddlers and boaters should expect moderate current and be aware that this section is particularly popular during spring white bass spawning runs, when fish congregate below the Black Shoals area. Water levels can vary seasonally, which may affect upriver passage. The 519-mile river drops 438 feet total from headwaters to mouth, providing diverse paddling opportunities depending on your launch point and destination along the lower river section.
