The Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge boat ramp provides access to the Red River and Lake Texoma near Sherman, Texas. This is a major waterway—the Red River is a large, fast-moving stream (Stream Order 9) with an average flow of over 68,000 cubic feet per second and current velocities around 6 feet/second. Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for significant current and water volume, particularly during high-flow periods. The ramp offers access to both the slower lake waters and the more dynamic river environment.
**Seasonal Restrictions:** Non-motorized boats (kayaks and canoes) are permitted March 15 through October 1 annually. From October 1 through March 14, only non-motorized boats and tube fishing are allowed in Big Mineral Creek from where it joins Lake Texoma upstream. This seasonal schedule prioritizes migratory bird habitat protection at this 11,320-acre refuge established in 1946.
**Amenities & Recreation:** The refuge provides boat ramps, swimming coves, and fishing piers. Big Mineral Camp is available for camping within 10 miles. Beyond paddling, the area offers excellent wildlife viewing along the scenic Wildlife Drive, hiking, picnicking, and year-round fishing. The refuge sits near historic downtown Denison with additional services and dining options.
