About This Access Site
**Location & Access:**
Located in the northwest section of Lake Richard B. Russell in Abbeville County, SC, the Harpers Ferry boat ramp is accessible via Harpers Ferry Road. This US Army Corps of Engineers-managed facility offers convenient launch access to this substantial impoundment on the Savannah River.

**Lake & Paddling Conditions:**
Lake Richard B. Russell spans nearly 10,000 acres of surface water with an average depth of 38.7 feet and maximum depths exceeding 160 feet, making it suitable for kayaking, canoeing, and motorboating. The lake is part of the major Savannah River system (a significant river comparable in scale to the Mississippi and Missouri). Paddlers should be prepared for variable conditions depending on water release schedules from upstream dams. The underlying river has a moderate gradient of 2.2 feet per mile and substantial flow, so be aware of current conditions and any recreational advisories issued by the Corps of Engineers.

**Amenities & Planning:**
The lake features 16 boat ramps across its 193-mile shoreline, providing multiple launch options. This northwest location is one of several access points on the lake. Plan ahead and check current water level and flow conditions before launching, as dam operations can significantly affect paddling conditions on this river system.
