Hat Rock State Park (also known as Umatilla Park) offers boat ramp access to Lake Wallula, a 64-mile-long reservoir on the Columbia River in northeastern Oregon. The facility provides a convenient launch point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats accessing this expansive, slower-moving water body. The park itself is a pleasant desert oasis with cottonwood and black locust trees, making it a comfortable staging area before or after time on the water.
Beyond the boat ramp, the park has additional amenities including a fishing pond (a spring-fed arm of Lake Wallula stocked with rainbow trout), picnic areas, a day-use pavilion, swimming access, and hiking/biking trails along the lake shore. The park is operated as part of the John Day Lock and Dam recreation area. The surrounding landscape features rolling sagebrush hills and basalt outcroppings typical of the region. This location is well-suited for paddlers looking to explore the calmer waters of Lake Wallula, as well as for anglers pursuing walleye and sturgeon, and those interested in day-use recreation.
