Hawkeye Wildlife Area

Located in North Liberty in Johnson County, the Hawkeye Wildlife Area provides access to paddling and boating opportunities in the region. The site features a concrete boat ramp with a gravel parking lot and seasonal dock availability (conditions permitting). This access point serves as a gateway to the Iowa River system and nearby Coralville Lake, a major reservoir offering multiple-use recreation including boating, fishing, and wildlife viewing.

Paddlers and boaters should be aware that water conditions can vary seasonally, particularly during high water periods when access may be affected. The area is situated near several outdoor recreation opportunities, including hiking and wildlife viewing along scenic portions of the Iowa River valley. Two campgrounds with reservable sites—Sandy Beach Camp and Sugar Bottom Campground—are located within 10 miles, making this a convenient base for extended paddling trips. Before visiting, check current water levels and conditions, as accessibility may be limited during extreme water stages.
