About This Access Site
Heart Butte Reservoir (also known as Lake Tschida) offers a convenient public boat launch at Johnson Ford in Grant County, North Dakota. Located approximately 15 miles south of Glen Ullin on Highway 49, this access point features barrier-free access directly from the highway, making it easily accessible for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboaters. The reservoir is managed by the Bureau of Reclamation and provides one of 10 boat ramps available around the lake.

The 142-foot-high Heart Butte Dam creates a tranquil, scenic impoundment on the Heart River—the only sizable body of water in the area and a popular recreation destination. Waters are generally calm, making this suitable for paddlers of various skill levels. The area supports healthy populations of walleye, crappie, catfish, perch, and white bass. Primitive campgrounds with wells and vault toilets are available nearby, and additional amenities including RV hookups, lodging, restaurants, and bait & tackle shops can be found in the surrounding area.
