About This Access Site
Heart Butte Reservoir (also known as Lake Tschida) offers excellent boating and paddling opportunities in north-central North Dakota. Located 15 miles south of Glen Ullin on Highway 49, this 142-foot high dam creates a substantial reservoir on the Heart River. The site features barrier-free highway access and one of 10 boat ramps available around the lake, making it convenient for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboat users to launch their vessels.

The reservoir is a popular recreation destination with calm, tranquil waters ideal for paddling. The area supports six primitive campgrounds with wells and vault toilets, plus additional RV facilities with hookups and nearby lodging options. Amenities include a convenience store and bait & tackle shop nearby, as well as on-site dining. The reservoir is well-stocked with crappie, walleye, catfish, perch, and white bass, making it attractive for anglers as well as recreational paddlers.

For more information, contact the Bureau of Reclamation's Dakotas Area Office at (701) 250-4592 or Box 1017, Bismarck, ND 58502. The extensive infrastructure—with 10 boat ramps and 10 campground areas around the lake—ensures ample access and facilities for extended paddling adventures.
