About This Access Site
Hennepin Hopper provides boat ramp access to the Illinois River in Putnam County, located about 1 mile west of State Route 26 along the scenic river bluffs. The access point is reached via a foot path beginning south of the boat ramp parking area at the Sue and Wes Dixon Waterfowl Refuge. Parking is limited to 40 vehicle and boat trailer units on a first-come, first-served basis, so plan accordingly during peak use times.

This site is particularly popular with kayakers and canoeists interested in wildlife viewing. The area features a 30-foot viewing tower ideal for spotting American White Pelicans, Black Terns, and numerous duck species across the expansive wetlands. In addition to paddling access, the refuge offers hiking trails that skirt the wetlands and traverse the levee along the river, making it an excellent destination for multi-activity outdoor recreation.
