Heron Lake State Park offers access to Willow Creek and Heron Reservoir near Tierra Amarilla in northern New Mexico. The park features a boat ramp facility and multiple launch points, including options at the Willow Creek and La Laja campgrounds. No lake use fees are required, though campground fees apply for overnight stays. An RV dump station is available at both Willow Creek and Blanco campgrounds.
**Important Note on Water Levels:** Paddlers and boaters should be aware that water levels at Heron Reservoir fluctuate significantly throughout the year. During low-water periods, the boat ramps may become unusable, and muddy conditions can make access difficult. Contact the park directly before visiting to confirm current water conditions and ramp accessibility. A valid New Mexico fishing license is required for angling.
The area provides excellent access to scenic paddling opportunities, including Willow Creek leading to Heron Reservoir and nearby connections to the Rio Chama Wild and Scenic River, which features dramatic multi-colored sandstone canyons up to 1,500 feet high.
