About This Access Site
The Highway JJ Bridge access point (also known as McAllister Bridge) near Wausaukee provides a convenient launch for the Menominee River, a substantial waterway with an average flow of 3,491 cubic feet per second. This location is the furthest practical upstream launch point for the lower Menominee, making it ideal for paddlers and boaters looking to explore this large river system. The bridge connects Wisconsin County Road JJ with Michigan County Road 342, serving as a gateway between the two states.

Paddlers should be aware that the Menominee River is a large, relatively fast-moving system with an average velocity of 4.71 feet per second and a notable 4.5 ft/mile gradient. About 1.5 miles upstream from this access point is Ingalls Dam; while a boat launch exists on the Michigan side of the dam, conditions there can be unpredictable with swift currents, so this Highway JJ location is recommended as the preferred launch for most paddlers. The river's substantial flow and large drainage area (3,957 square miles) mean conditions can vary seasonably, so check current water levels and flow rates before paddling.
