Horseshoe Bay is a protected public water access located on Lake Superior's north shore, approximately 20 miles northeast of Grand Marais and 17 miles southwest of Grand Portage. The site features a large concrete launch ramp with an L-shaped crib dock that provides some wave protection, making it a practical entry point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. Note that the dock area may be shallow near its end, so plan accordingly. The access point includes paved parking for 10 car/trailer spaces and a portable restroom facility.
This scenic location offers paddlers access to a Lake Superior safe harbor with nearby remote shoreline and rock cliffs. The bay itself provides protected waters ideal for launching, though paddlers should be prepared for open lake conditions if venturing beyond the immediate bay area. The site maintains a primitive character with a "pack in, pack out" philosophy, so come prepared with supplies. Given its proximity to the Grand Portage area and access to Lake Superior's north shore, Horseshoe Bay is well-suited for day trips and exploration of the scenic coastal environment.
