Horseshoe Lake is a 1,890-acre oxbow lake located within Horseshoe Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area near Olive Branch, Illinois. This scenic paddling destination maintains a connection to the Mississippi River through drainage ditches, creating diverse wildlife viewing opportunities and a robust fishery. The lake is relatively shallow, with an average depth of 4-5 feet and a maximum depth of 5-6 feet, making it suitable for recreational paddlers and anglers of all skill levels.
The access site features multiple boat ramps available for public use, with the main ramp located on the north shore inside the park. A 50-horsepower limit applies to all motorized watercraft. Beyond paddling and boating, Horseshoe Lake is an excellent location for wildlife observation—the area is particularly known for spotting bald eagles during winter months. Amenities include campgrounds around the lake. Note that boat fishing is permitted year-round except during waterfowl hunting season, so paddlers should check seasonal restrictions before planning trips during fall and winter months.
