About This Access Site
Horseshoe Lake is a large 1,890-acre oxbow lake located in Alexander County at the Horseshoe Lake State Fish & Wildlife Area, just south of Olive Branch, IL. The lake maintains a shallow, gentle character with maximum depths of 4-6 feet, making it ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and recreational boating. A connection to the Mississippi River through drainage ditches supports diverse fish populations including bass, catfish, crappie, carp, and buffalo.

Multiple boat ramps provide convenient public access to the lake. The main launch facility is located on the north shore inside the park, with additional ramps available around the lake to suit different paddling plans. Note that a 50-horsepower limit applies to all watercraft, and boat fishing is prohibited during waterfowl season. The shallow, calm waters and extensive shoreline make this a popular spot for both anglers and paddlers, while the park area also offers good opportunities for wildlife observation, including bald eagle sightings during winter months.
