About This Access Site
Located on the northern shore of Michigan's largest inland lake, Houghton Lake State Forest Park provides direct water access for kayakers, canoeists, and boaters. The site features a boat ramp situated right on the shores of Houghton Lake (20,044 acres), making launching convenient for a full day of paddling or boating. The park is operated on a first-come, first-served basis and offers a rustic campground with 50 sites suitable for tent camping or small trailers, along with basic amenities including a modern restroom building and potable water access.

Paddlers should note that vehicle access to the ramp has been temporarily closed—contact the Roscommon County Parks office at 989-821-6374 or 1-800-447-2757 for current conditions before planning your visit. For additional boating options nearby, Higgins Lake is located 6 miles north, and the Muskegon River is 2 miles west. The large surface area of Houghton Lake makes it ideal for multiple water sports, and the site serves as a good basecamp for exploring the region's waterways.
