**Location & Access:** James Lake (also known as Camp Four Lake) is located approximately 10 miles north of Buhl, MN in St. Louis County. This is a carry-in access site rather than a traditional boat ramp—expect a roughly ¼-mile portage from the parking area to the water. Take Highway 25 north of Buhl for 10 miles; the parking area is located on the left side of the road, about ¼ mile south of the lake.
**What to Expect:** This small lake offers a quieter paddling experience ideal for kayakers and canoeists seeking a backcountry setting. Two primitive campsites are available on the lake for overnight trips. The carry-in nature of this access keeps it less crowded than motorized ramps. Nearby lakes—including Dark Lake, Knuckey Lake, and Clear Lake—make this a good base for exploring multiple water bodies in the area.
**Practical Notes:** Plan your trip with the portage distance in mind and bring appropriate gear for transporting your boat. This is a no-reservation, first-come basis access point. Check conditions before heading out, as this is a backcountry area without developed facilities.
