About This Access Site
Johns Hole is a designated boat launch providing access to the Snake River near Idaho Falls in Bonneville County. Located on Porter Canal along the Snake River, this access point serves as a gateway to one of the region's major waterways. The site is situated within the scenic Columbia Plateau and Rocky Mountains region, with nearby recreation opportunities including Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Ririe Reservoir.

The Snake River at this location is a substantial waterway—a major river system with an average flow of nearly 50,000 cubic feet per second and an average velocity of approximately 11 feet per second. Paddlers and boaters should be prepared for moderate current and gradient (averaging 15.8 feet per mile). The river supports various recreation opportunities, and designated camping areas are available on a first-come, first-serve basis between Conant and Byington boat access points. **Important note:** If you plan to float through Grand Teton National Park, you'll need a permit available at the Visitor Center in Moose—stop there to obtain your permit and ask about current river conditions before launching.
