About This Access Site
Keithsburg Riverside Campground offers convenient public access to the Mississippi River in Mercer County, Illinois, with multiple boat ramps available. The facility features 2 boat ramps on the south end and 1 ramp on the north side, making it a practical launch point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboaters. The site is first-come, first-served with onsite amenities including restrooms with showers, a fish cleaning station, and dump stations. Note that access roads can be steep and rough; check current conditions before launching, particularly if towing larger vessels.

The Mississippi River at this location is a major waterway with significant flow—averaging over 685,000 cubic feet per second—making it suitable for experienced paddlers and motorboaters. With a gentle average gradient of 0.8 feet per mile, the river moves steadily here, though current speeds average around 11 feet per second. Paddlers should be prepared for strong currents and heavy commercial traffic typical of the Mississippi's main channel.

The site provides excellent access to nearby recreational opportunities, including the Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge (24,149 acres), which offers opportunities for wildlife viewing and exploration of quieter sloughs and backwaters. Whether launching for a day paddle, fishing trip, or extended river journey, Keithsburg Riverside offers one of the more developed public access points along this section of the Mississippi.
