About This Access Site
The Kettleson Hogsback Complex offers boat ramp access to Sunken Lake and the surrounding wetland system in Spirit Lake, Iowa. This 2,040-acre wildlife management area features gravel boat ramps suited for small watercraft like kayaks and canoes. The access road is paved and easy to navigate—head west on 125th Street from Highway M-49, follow the entrance road north about 1/4 mile to reach the ramp. Multiple launch points provide access to different sections of the lake system.

This is an excellent destination for paddlers interested in wildlife viewing and birding, with nearly 300 bird species documented at the complex. The area encompasses shallow lakes and extensive wetlands that serve as critical habitat for migratory waterfowl. Beyond paddling, visitors can explore the scenic 3-mile Hogsback Trail on foot, which showcases glacial geology and offers panoramic views of the landscape. The protected wetlands make this a peaceful and naturally rich paddling environment, though water levels and conditions may vary seasonally.
