About This Access Site
Kimball Lake is a 190-acre lake located about 15 minutes north of Grand Marais in Cook County's Gunflint Ranger District. To reach the boat ramp, take MN 61 north to County Road 12 (Gunflint Trail), then follow it 10.7 miles to Forest Road 140 (Trout Lake Road), and continue 2 miles to the campground entrance on the right. The lake has a maximum depth of 77 feet and offers public boat launch access for both trailered boats and paddlers.

The site features a rustic campground with a public boat ramp, picnic tables, fire rings, and vault toilets. Potable water is available, though there are no electric hookups. The campground is quite basic, with 10 large gravel sites suitable for RVs and trailers. A nearby accessible fishing pier is available at Mink Lake for those seeking barrier-free access.

Note that backcountry camping is available on Kimball Lake itself—there is one first-come, first-served wilderness site with a fire grate, latrine, and picnic table. If camping on the lake, remember to hang food packs, fully extinguish fires, treat or boil water, and wash dishes away from the shoreline. A hiking trail circles the lake for exploring the surrounding area.
