About This Access Site
Lake Charleston Spillway Park offers boat access to the Embarrass River and Lake Charleston near Charleston in Coles County, Illinois. The site features a concrete boat ramp suitable for launching kayaks, canoes, and larger motorboats, though paddlers should note that sand accumulation on the ramp may require some effort during launch and recovery. A dedicated canoe launch is also available at this location, accessed via Highway 130 toward Charleston Lake.

Boaters should be aware that Lake Charleston requires all watercraft to have valid state licensing. The site offers self-service kayak rentals for those without their own equipment. Once on the water, paddlers can explore over 9 miles of connected trails and parks around the lake, including Sister City Park, Lakeview Park, and Woodyard Park. The Embarrass River east of the lake is known for good bass populations, while Lake Charleston itself supports healthy catfish populations. Trail maps for both the lake and Embarrass River are available to help plan your paddling route.
