Lake J.B. Thomas, located 12 miles southwest of Snyder on the Colorado River, offers two primary boat ramp access points. The main ramp is a one-lane concrete launch with parking for approximately 10 vehicles, accessible via FM 1298. A second option is Road 3234 Boat Launch Ramp, located at the southeast corner of the lake near the J.B. Thomas Dam, which features two one-lane concrete ramps with unimproved gravel parking.
This 7,282-acre reservoir has a mean depth of 13 feet and maximum depth of 61 feet, making it suitable for various watercraft including kayaks, canoes, and motorized boats. However, paddlers should be aware that water levels fluctuate significantly (4-10 feet), which can affect ramp usability during low-water periods. The ramps may become inaccessible when the lake is at minimum levels, so it's wise to check current conditions before visiting.
