About This Access Site
The Lake Monticello West Boat Ramp provides access to Monticello Reservoir and Frees Creek in the Piedmont region of South Carolina. This 6,700-acre impoundment offers 54 miles of shoreline and reaches depths up to 89 feet, making it suitable for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The site features a boat ramp facility managed by SCE&G (South Carolina Electric & Gas Company) and is one of three launch points on the lake. Paddlers should note that approximately 7.2 miles of shoreline within the Nuclear Exclusion Zone are not accessible to the public.

The upper reaches of the lake, accessed from this location, offer scenic tree-lined coves that are particularly appealing for paddlers seeking calmer water and natural surroundings. The reservoir is popular for fishing, with species including black crappie and striped bass available. For those planning to camp nearby, Rocky Branch Seasonal Campground is located within 10 miles and offers reservable campsites. Paddlers should plan their route to avoid the power station area and explore the more scenic upper sections of the impoundment.
