Lake Monticello West offers convenient access to Monticello Reservoir (also called Frees Creek Lake), a 6,700-acre impoundment in Fairfield County. This is one of three boat ramps serving the lake, making it a reliable launch point for kayakers, canoeists, and motorboats. The reservoir features approximately 54 miles of shoreline with scenic, tree-lined coves in the upper reaches, offering good paddling opportunities. Maximum depth reaches about 89 feet. Note that 7.2 miles of shoreline within the Nuclear Exclusion Zone are off-limits to the public.
The ramp is managed by SCE&G and is located near a full-service facility that stocks supplies including live bait, ice, non-ethanol gasoline, and motor oil, plus boat registration and battery charging services. Nearby amenities include picnic areas, a swimming area, and a paved walking path. For overnight stays, Rocky Branch Seasonal Campground is available within 10 miles and offers reservable sites. Access from I-20 is straightforward via Exit 68, heading north on SC 215 (Monticello Road) for approximately 24 miles.
