Lake Springfield offers excellent access for paddlers and boaters with four free public concrete boat ramps conveniently located around this 3,866-acre reservoir. The lake, created in 1931 by damming Lick and Sugar creeks, features a maximum depth of approximately 30 feet and average depth of 13 feet, making it suitable for various water sports. All watercraft must be registered and licensed according to City of Springfield and Illinois State requirements before launching.
The lake is managed by City Water, Power and Light and serves as a major recreational hub for central Illinois, featuring 57 miles of shoreline with eight public parks and multiple public docks. Be aware that certain areas are designated as "no boat" zones marked by buoys. The facility is part of a larger recreational complex that includes the Henson Robinson Zoo, Lincoln Memorial Garden, and several dining and entertainment venues along the shore. Future ADA improvements are planned, including an accessible boat launch and dock at Center Park.
