About This Access Site
Lake Springfield is a major recreational resource in central Illinois, offering paddlers and boaters easy access via four free public concrete boat ramps. This 3,866-acre reservoir, created in 1931 by damming Lick and Sugar creeks, features an average depth of 13 feet with a maximum depth of around 30 feet, making it suitable for kayaking, canoeing, and motorized boating. All watercraft must be registered and licensed according to City of Springfield and State of Illinois requirements.

The lake is bordered by eight public parks and 57 miles of shoreline, providing scenic paddling opportunities and access to recreational areas including the Henson Robinson Zoo, Lincoln Memorial Garden, and various fishing locations. Note that certain areas are marked off-limits to boats with "no boat" buoys, so paddlers should familiarize themselves with these restrictions before launching. The facility welcomes over 600,000 visitors annually and offers trailer storage options at the marina, though slip renters receive priority service.
