Lake Springfield offers excellent access for kayakers, canoeists, and boaters with **four free public concrete boat ramps** managed by City Water, Power and Light. This 3,866-acre reservoir, created in 1931 by damming Lick and Sugar creeks, provides a substantial paddling destination with an average depth of 13 feet and maximum depth of 30 feet. The lake features 57 miles of shoreline with eight public parks and multiple public boat docks, making it a major recreational hub for central Illinois with over 600,000 annual visitors.
All boats and watercraft must be registered and licensed according to City of Springfield and State of Illinois requirements before launching. Be aware that certain areas are marked off-limits with "no boat" buoys, so paddlers should familiarize themselves with designated zones before heading out. Additional amenities include a marina with slip rentals and trailer storage available. The surrounding area includes access to the Henson Robinson Zoo, Lincoln Memorial Garden, and other recreational facilities along the shoreline.
