The Lawnes Creek boat ramp provides excellent access to explore the lower James River and the scenic Lawnes Creek. This recently upgraded launch site features a new two-lane concrete ramp and an aluminum dock, making it easy to get canoes, kayaks, and small motorized boats on the water.
The James River is a major waterway, running over 1,100 miles across Virginia. At this location, the river is relatively wide and slow-moving, with an average flow of around 12,800 cubic feet per second. The gentle 2 ft/mile gradient makes for easy paddling, though boaters should still be cautious of the river's size and power. The Lawnes Creek access is situated about 2,745 miles from the river's mouth, in the coastal region where the river gradually transitions from freshwater to brackish.
This launch site is a great starting point to discover the history and natural beauty of the lower James River and surrounding areas, including the nearby Colonial National Historical Park. Paddlers and boaters can enjoy serene creek paddling, wildlife viewing, and easy access to the main stem of the James River for longer excursions.
