About This Access Site
Little Grassy Lake is a 44,000-acre recreation area located in Makanda within the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge in Williamson County, Illinois. This access point offers a boat ramp for kayakers, canoeists, and motorized boaters looking to explore the forested lake. The lake features three boat ramps total, making it convenient for water access, and a marina with boat rentals is available on-site.

**Before launching, be aware that a user permit is required to access the refuge, and outboard motors are limited to 10hp.** The lake is cooperatively managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Paddlers should exercise caution and watch for submerged objects, which can pose hazards to boat operators. The surrounding forested landscape and proximity to the larger Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge make this an excellent destination for kayaking and canoeing.

The area is family-friendly with nearby campgrounds and lodging options. Fishing is currently unrestricted, with opportunities to catch bass, sunfish, crappie, and catfish. For specific details about permit requirements, hours of operation, and current conditions, contact the refuge directly before your visit.
