Little Grassy Lake

Little Grassy Lake offers a scenic paddling and boating destination within the 44,000-acre Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge in Williamson County. The lake is surrounded by forested land and provides good opportunities for fishing and recreational boating. A user permit is required to access the refuge. The lake features three boat ramps total, making it convenient for launching kayaks, canoes, and motorized boats.

**Access & Regulations:** This particular ramp is located in the Makanda area and provides concrete launch facilities with parking. Note that outboard motors are limited to 10hp, making this a relatively quiet environment suitable for paddling. Be aware of submerged objects throughout the lake, which pose a hazard to boat operators. The fishery is cooperatively managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

**Recreation Opportunities:** Beyond paddling and boating, the area offers fishing for bass, sunfish, crappie, and catfish, along with nearby campgrounds and a marina with boat rentals.
