Little Sand Bay

Little Sand Bay offers a well-developed public boat launch and recreation area on Lake Superior's Bayfield Peninsula, located approximately 13 miles north of Bayfield via Old County K. The Town of Russell operates this facility, which features a boat ramp, dock/pier access, ample parking for vehicles and boat trailers, and seasonal restroom facilities. A sandy beach and picnic area make it convenient for paddlers to prepare gear or rest between trips.

The site serves as a gateway to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and its 21 islands. The seasonal Little Sand Bay Visitor Center (open since 2020) provides orientation information, kayak safety tips, camping permits for nearby Apostle Islands campsites, and maps—making it an excellent stop before paddling. Note that Lake Superior conditions can be challenging; paddlers should check weather forecasts and consult with staff about appropriate routes for your experience level before launching.
